It’s February, the month of love, filled with candy, hearts, flowers, sweet cards and mushy music. Yet when I got my Secret Subject Swap and was asked to create a recipe for love, that’s not where my mind went. Maybe because I’ve never been big on Valentine’s Day?
On the day #MiracleMike and I got married, almost 25 years ago, my heart skipped a beat when he looked at me with those blue eyes, reached for my hand walking down the beach or shook his head in amazement at something goofy I had said or done. Those things still make my heart skip a beat, more than they ever did then. Yet to this day I still don’t know if Mike could tell you my favorite color or my favorite band. (Pink and I don’t have one. I love music too much to pick just one)
It’s saying those words, “In sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, till death do us part” and living them every day, all day, 24/7 365 days a year, whether you’re mad at that person or not.
We’ve had 25 years of day in, day out living. Getting up, going to work, paying bills, fighting, standing together against the world. It’s never been all hearts and flowers and I’m glad. It is so much more than I ever expected. It’s sitting up all night, talking things out. Figuring them out. It’s the one person who can make you madder than you’ve ever been, knowing what buttons to push, saying things they KNOW will make you mad, yet at the end of the day you can’t imagine life without them and knowing they feel the same.
It’s coming home to supper already cooked, a load of laundry done, your coffee pot set for the next morning, your favorite chocolate for no reason, flowers to make you smile. It’s going to a concert for a group you don’t like, just to see him smile. It’s believing that your other half can do great things and having their back all the way, picking them up, dusting them off and setting them back on their feet when they fall. It’s a million jokes between the two of you, shared over time. It’s knowing what the other person is thinking without them saying a word, with just a look, cracking each other up. Eye rolls when no one is looking. It’s buying a Hot Wheels because you know it’s the one he’s been looking for, making me potato soup when I’m sick
It’s holding onto each other as you lose friends, grandparents, parents, a much loved niece. Being too stubborn to quit or give up.
A recipe for love is all of these things and so many more.
