“Stop scratching” Hubs said to Sarah.
“I can’t, it itches“, she replied.
Hubs shook his head as he sipped his coffee. He didn’t know what to think lately, his Sarah, his calm, cool, able to handle anything Sarah was miserable. She was covered in hives and though no one had said it out loud, he knew they were all thinking the same thing he was. Sarah was a wreck. Mama getting engaged had thrown her off her rhythm. The hives were nerves, pure and simple.
“Hon” he said, “You can’t keep this up. You’re miserable. Talk to me. Why does it bother you so badly that your Mama wants to marry him. He’s not a bad guy, he makes her laugh and she hasn’t gotten into one scrape since she met him”.
“You’ve been talking to Earl Ray, I knew it’! Sarah exclaimed. “He and Anne think this, this man hung the moon. All they see is that Mama is out of their hair. They don’t care that this is the worst mistake Mama will ever make. You don’t see it either. No one does but me. Why? What makes any of y’all think this guy is so great? He doesn’t have a dime to his name, he lives in that tiny little house. Does he even have running water? His car is old. He looks at Mama and sees dollar signs. He doesn’t love her. She needs to be in lockdown in a nursing home, not running up and down the road, chasing a man that only wants her money.”
Sarah slammed the door as she went back into the house.
As Hubs finished his coffee, he wondered if he should tell Sarah what had been said at lunch that day. No, he thought, it wasn’t time for her to know. She had to figure this all out on her own. He hoped it would happen soon, before she said or did something that would change things in ways he didn’t even want to think about.
As he picked up the evening edition of the paper, he thought maybe he would take Sarah to the diner for burgers. Maybe it would take her mind off everything and she would quit itching…………..
Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
Your words are:
itches ~ lockdown ~ rhythm ~ edition ~ diner ~ burgers
