As Annie got ready for bed she said a silent prayer that the dream didn’t come back tonight. She needed to sleep. She had spent the last week trying to figure out what it was telling her. “Seriously” she said to Spot The Cat, “who dreams of being 97 years old and being stuck in a nursing home in Canada? I’ve never been to Canada and I’m only 60. I have no idea what it’s even like in Canada!
Spot the Cat had no answers for her as Annie snuggled under the blanket and curled up next to her snoring Hubs.
She opened her eyes and couldn’t understand what she was seeing. The sun was blinding~ This wasn’t a soft Southern September morning sun. Where was she? Why was the sun so bright? What was that white stuff covering everything?
As she struggled to sit up in bed, a young woman entered the room, “How are you this morning Miss Annie? Are you ready for breakfast?”
“Who is this person and why are they talking to me like I am a difficult child? Why does she care if I am ready for breakfast? What business is it of hers?”, Annie thought to herself as she tried to wrap her mind around what was going on?
“Here’s you go Miss Annie, your morning medicine” the stranger said as she handed Annie a small cup with 4 pills in them.
“Those aren’t mine” Annie said as she looked at the woman with suspicious eyes, “Why are you giving them to me? Who are you and more important, where the hell am I? TELL ME YOUR NAME NOW”.
“I’m Tess, your day nurse. Just think a minute and you’ll know where you are” Tess replied.
Annie watched as Tess opened drawers and chose a pair of soft blue sweat pants and a blue t-shirt. “I wonder how she knows I like blue” she wondered.
Annie decided she might at well take the pills. Maybe they would help her wake up from this nightmare. Besides, she felt safe with Tess, she had a kind smile and seemed to know what Annie liked.
A noise outside the door startled Annie and as she watched as a young man brought in a tray with breakfast. He sat it on the tray by Annie’s bed and lifted the lid. Annie was surprised, it was her favorite breakfast~ Oatmeal, raisins and yes! there was the brown sugar and a small carafe of cream to put in her coffee. Where ever she was, they seemed to know what she liked to eat, she thought to herself.
3 hours later, Annie collapsed on the bed in “her” room. “How exhausting”, she thought. “I didn’t know I could paint like that”. She was surprised she had the patience to teach anyone, much less people 75 and up how to paint a tree.
” I think I’ll just take a little nap before lunch” she thought.
As the alarm went off, Annie flung back the covers and hit the button to make the blasted thing shut up~ She rolled over and was startled to see a cat sitting there and who was that man in her bed?
