Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
Southern Belle Charm’s words this month are:
mother of pearl ~ emerald ~ fake it ~ happy ~ mom ~ bless my socks
They were submitted by: http://spatulasonparade.blogspot.com
Since getting out of jail a couple of weeks ago, Mama had been on a cleaning spree and was determined to get all the “junk” out of the house. Sarah was tired and cranky. Mama still wasn’t talking to Earl Ray and Sarah thought he should be there to help with all of this “spring cleaning”.
“Bless my socks” Mama said as Sarah loaded Hubs’ truck for another trip to the local thrift store. “Would you look at that, I found that ugly Emerald ring your Daddy gave me”.
Sarah rolled her eyes. She knew that Daddy had given Mama a lot of jewelry over the years and it was all good quality. She couldn’t imagine any of it being ugly. As Mama waved her hand around Sarah grabbed her hand so she could get a good look at the ring. The emerald was gorgeous, the setting wasn’t really Mama’s style. Sarah couldn’t understand her Daddy buying a ring like for Mama.
“I had to fake it every time I wore the darn thing” Mama said. “Every once in a while, your Daddy would ask me about it. I reckon he just wanted to see me with it on. It made him happy to see it on my finger. Funny thing though, he never cared if I wore it when we went out. I always told your Daddy that since Emeralds were fragile in their own way, it wasn’t safe to wear much”.
Just as Sarah got the last box in the truck, Earl Ray pulled up in his big ol’ SUV. Sarah couldn’t believe that Earl Ray had bought a vehicle whose color was Mother of Pearl. Did he not realize how silly he looked in that thing? You would have thought being Sheriff in a small town he would have chosen something a little less conspicuous for his personal vehicle.
Earl Ray shot Sarah a questioning look as he walked up to Mama. “What’s going on Mom? Why is Sarah loading the truck with boxes? You still mad at me? I was just doing my job, you know that. You and Billi Fay have GOT to quit doing things like that. One of these days, the Judge is going to retire and y’all won’t be able to talk your way out of acting like fools”.
Mama huffed as she put one hand on her hip, raised her hand and pointed her finger at Earl Ray. “Boy, you better not be talking to your Mama that way. I taught you better than that. What’s with calling me Mom? I am your MAMA. That’s what you call me, you know that. I don’t like the word Mom”.
Mama was waving her hands now, the more she got excited, the more she talked with her hands.
Earl Ray went white as a sheet and grabbed Mama’s hand with the Emerald ring on it. His eyes were as big as saucers and he stared at the ring on Mama’s hand. “Mama, where did you get that ring”?
Come back next month and find out what Mama has gotten herself into now…….
