Poor Billy Ray
As Sarah sat on the porch and watched the birds dip into the waves, munching her powdery donut, she thought of how Mama had handled the whole episode with the “drone thingie” as she called it. Poor Billy Ray, that Fritz girl had really messed him up. Thank goodness she had moved away and wasn’t the town’s problem anymore. Now they just had to figure out what to do for Billy. Earl Ray had said he would do what he could to make it easier on him and Mama didn’t want to press charges against him for shooting at her. But, well it was out of Mama’s hands at this point.
Just as Sarah decided to get off the porch and take a walk on the beach the phone rang. Her first thought was “Oh Lord, what does Mama want now”. She admitted to herself as she walked to the phone that as much as she loved Mama, she could wear a soul down to the bone.
She was surprised to see it was actually Miss Idora calling. Sarah answered the phone, and listened as Miss Idora started babbling, not even saying “Hello”.
“Sarah, I have decided I am going to hire the best attorney in town for Billy Ray. Poor fellow never had much of anything and I refuse to stand by and watch him pay for the rest of his life because that Fritz girl messed with his head and made him think he was something he wasn’t! Why that poor boy didn’t know it was your Mama he was shooting at. Why on earth did you even let her have that drone thingie? You had to know she would get into a mess with it!”
As Sarah listened, she hoped when she was Mama’s and Miss Idora’s age she had a fraction of their energy.
Before she could reply, Miss Idora continued “Now who should I hire? Any ideas? Do you think maybe the Andrews boy would take the case? He’s supposed to be the best, but well I can’t stand talking to him. Grammatically, his speech is all wrong. I don’t understand how anyone can listen to him in a courtroom. It just makes me crazy to hear him speak, why even at church he just mangles everything. What do they teach in schools nowadays? How can you be a good attorney when you don’t know your grammar? It’s just a shame”.
As Miss Idora wound down, all Sarah could think was “Oh Lord, what do I do now”. The Andrews boy was a good attorney, but Sarah wasn’t sure he was the right one for this case. He and Billy Ray had had run-ins in school and he would probably be glad to help put Billy Ray away for a long time.
“Miss Idora, let me do some research to find the best attorney for Billy Ray. I agree with you, I am not sure that the Andrews boy is the right choice. Don’t worry, we’ll find the best one for Billy Ray”.
Sarah put the phone down, heading for the beach and shaking her head. Mama and Miss Idora would be the death of her yet.
Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
Your words are:
bird ~ fraction ~ grammatical ~ powdery ~ donut
