Mama took a deep breath as she sat on the couch with her children. She knew it was time to let them know what her secrets were.
“Y’all know that your Daddy worked hard and was a good sheriff. But he wasn’t good with money. It just flowed out of his hands like he was trying to hold onto water”, Mama told Sarah and Earl Ray. “What you didn’t know is that my Mama and Daddy didn’t like YOUR Daddy. They thought he should have chosen a different career. They thought him being sheriff would put us all in danger. It did come close a time or two, but we dealt with it”.
Mama sighed and continued. ” It was like they slapped me in the face when they said some of the things they did. I was in hysterics at the time. I never did tell your Daddy what all was said. It would have broken his heart to know what they thought of him. And Lord knows, Mama was good at hiding things, so he never knew”.
“I promised myself that I would NEVER ask them for a thing for the rest of my life. Mama would slip me a few dollars here and there without a word. I always wondered if she regretted saying those things to me and that was her way of saying she was sorry.”
Sarah and Earl Ray were stunned as Mama continued…………
” I took that money and started saving it. Ms. Idora and I would meet weekly at Dave’s Java Cafe and we had a plan. We started investing in things. I didn’t know a darn thing about buying and selling stocks or investing in anything and Ms. Idora didn’t know much. But she knew more than I did. I learned all I could and read everything I could get my hands on. Little by little our nest eggs grew. We got lucky on a few investments, lost on some and then we got really lucky. We invested in some start up computer companies. And well……….we did well. Really Really well.”
” So now; now I have trust funds set up for both of you. Currently, they each have about 6 MILLION dollars in each one.”
At the bedazzled look on Sarah and Earl Ray’s faces, Mama knew what she had to say next would take the wind out of their sails.
As Earl Ray started to speak, Mama held up her hand and told him she wasn’t finished yet.
“The reason I couldn’t remember where the check book was and why I was so flustered is I had some tests run a few weeks ago. I had just gotten the results and I was trying to work through what they found and figure out how to tell y’all, come up with a game plan on how to deal with it all. They found a lump on my right breast. It’s Stage II cancer. So now we have to figure out what we do from here”.
Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
