Are you wondering how in the heck something as horrible as ICU Delirium and Fly On The Wall can possibly go together? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. So am I.
ICU Delirium is a very real thing that I had never heard of until I had to live through it with Mike. It’s scary and heartbreaking to see a loved one be so confused about who they are, who you are and where you are. It can have long lasting side effects that carry through long after you’ve left the hospital. If you want to learn more about it here are some links:
Thankfully, at this point I haven’t seen any long term effects in Mike. His Cognitive skills seem to be where they were. He’s still one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. His sense of humor is intact and he can still make me laugh. He does seem subdued in many ways and is less passionate about some things. That could be that he is still processing all that has happened the last 3 months. The doctor doesn’t seem to think it’s depression. That is reassuring~
Despite the heartbreak of the ICU Delirium, some of what he came up with when it was raging has made us laugh when I tell him about it. As part of his care, every 4 hours the nurses had to wake him up if he were sleeping and ask their questions. Sometimes he would give them the answers they needed to hear. Other times the delirium was in full force and his answers were off the wall, other times, his sense of humor showed up and he was just messing with them.
Some of the ones that have cracked us up?
Nurse: Where are you?
Nurse: Hell? Why are you in hell?
Mike: Because I am a UK fan and I am at Duke Hospital and their basketball team is our biggest rival…….Do you know how hard it is for me to know that I am alive because of doctors at DUKE?
Me: What day is it? Do you know the year? Know who I am?
Mike: The year is 2016 and you are my keeper. You keep me trapped here in DUKE hell….
Nurse: Mike, tell me where you are
Mike: I’m in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, on a boat and it’s 85 degrees.
Nurse: ( as he looks at me to see how I am taking the answer, I’m snickering), Oh! Well why do you think you are there Mike?
Mike: Because it beats the hell out of being here in DUKE hell where it’s cold and you keep waking me up to ask me some stupid questions.
Do you sense a theme here with his answers? Yeah me too. Silly man.
