Well this sure wasn’t going as planned, Earl Ray thought to himself. He thought Mama would be thrilled he had found her checkbook. After all finding Mama’s checkbook was kind of important. If he hadn’t found it, Mama might have faced financial devastation. He didn’t expect ecstasy from her, he had known she wouldn’t be happy with him, but this, well this wasn’t what he had expected at all from his sweet, sort of ditzy, let’s have fun Mama……….
Mama, with her hands on her hips, looked at her children and couldn’t remember ever being this angry at either of them. Earl Ray had gone into her home when she wasn’t there and searched through her things. Oh, she knew he had good intentions, but still. How could he have done that? Sarah, well Sarah was just as bad, though she hadn’t been in on the breaking and entering she had backed Earl Ray up when he confronted her.
“It’s MY life, not yours, you had no right to go through my things. I don’t care that you thought you were helping me. You didn’t hesitate at all, you just got this fool idea in your head and did it. WHY? I want to know WHY you thought you could do that to your Mama?”
Sarah couldn’t remember there ever being this much tension between her and Mama, she knew that they had to use caution with Mama at this point, but she just wanted to scream. Good Lord, didn’t Mama see what she was putting her children through?
As Sarah opened her mouth to try and explain to Mama just how worried they had been about the missing checkbook Mama whirled around and pointed her finger at Sarah as she said “YOU Missy, well I am so disappointed in you. Not trusting your Mama enough to think she could take care of things herself. Who do you think kept this family together when your Daddy was working all those hours? Who do you think took care of everything so your Daddy could do what he did best? Did you think all I wanted to do with my life was be your mama? Did you think I didn’t have a brain in my head all these years?”
” Mama, the checkbook was in the freezer, under the peas. You came to us and told us you couldn’t find it. What were we supposed to do? Not worry? Not be concerned that a crook had gotten ahold of it? Just let someone take all your money?” Sarah asked.
Sarah’s heart broke as she saw Mama deflate. She looked so small, and all of a sudden Sarah saw that Mama looked old and frail. Her heart felt like it was breaking into tiny pieces as she put her arms around Mama and led her over to the couch.
As Earl Ray sat on one side of Mama and Sarah on the other, Mama took their hands.
Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
Refill that cup and let’s find out what everyone else came up with by following the links below~
