Someone told me the other day that being a Belle was not a good thing to be. I just smiled while I listened. I didn’t say the rude things I was thinking, because I’m a Belle! Perhaps we should just call ourselves Steel Magnolias?
Belle or Steel Magnolia, doesn’t matter what title you choose, it’s what we are.
We’ve always been Steel Magnolias. We just didn’t have a name for it until the 1987 play by Robert Harling. If you haven’t seen the play, I’m betting you saw the 1989 movie of the same name.
To me either name denotes strength to face our life’s journey with dignity, grace and joy. We may look soft and fluffy to the rest of the world but we’re not. Mess with our kids, break our heart, hurt someone we love and the steel shines through.
We know that in order to get where we want to be in life it takes hard work and we have to do it ourselves. We don’t mind. We know we WILL get there. We appreciate the small things in life. A flower picked for us by a child, a smile, a hug when you need one most. We’re loyal to a fault. We never quit. And yes, we can be stubborn and hard-headed. These are not always bad things to be. It enables us to carry on through the bad times as well as the good.
Don’t listen to people who say being a Belle is not a good thing. They’re misguided souls. Just smile and say “Bless Your Heart”.
