Dorthea sighed after she hung up the phone. She knew Sarah didn’t care for her. For some reason they had never been able to get along. Even at almost 60 Sarah had a youthful glow and if Dorthea were honest with herself, she hadn’t had it even when they were all young and ready to take on the world. But then, she hadn’t been as fortunate as Sarah had in life.
“How can I tell her this”, Dorthea thought as she belted herself into the car to head to Sarah’s. “Why am I the one that has to tell her. She has been so fortunate in her life and I am going to burst her bubble and I don’t want too. I don’t want to be the one that has to look her in the eyes and tell her the truth”. As she drove, her mind was spinning and Dorthea realized that she was willing to destroy Sarah if it meant saving her child. She didn’t care that she would most likely have to leave town and move far away, though to be honest at her age she was tempted to stay in town and ride it out. Then again, the people in a small Southern town could be awfully mean to someone they had always considered an outsider. “Well” she thought, “I’ll worry about that when Janey is recovering”.
She nervously twisted her sapphire ring as she walked to the door. Did Sarah know where it had come from? No, there was no way she could know. She had never told a soul about that night of lust with Sarah’s hubs, long before he was dating Sarah. He had given her the ring because he felt so bad about what had happened. No one knew he was the father of her Janey, she had married Dale a month later and everyone had always thought Janey was the reason why. What would they say when word got out that Dale wasn’t her father? Thank goodness she had told Dale before she married him about that night and the chance that Janey might not be his daughter. He hadn’t cared. Now though, the whole town would know.
As Sarah walked to the door, she plastered a smile on her face………………….
Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
My words are: belted ~ youth ~ glow ~ fortunate ~ sapphire ~ lust
